Eger Castle in northern Hungary has been renovated with almost two billion forints (EUR 5.3 million), and its museum has been enriched with valuable private property, the institution’s press officer told MTI on Thursday.
According to Noémi Petneházi-Halász, the castle and fortress system of Eger has recently been completed in several points for tourism purposes with the help of 1.5 billion forints of EU (EUR 4 million) and 460 million forints (EUR 1.3 million) of government support.
In addition to the new elements of the project, visitors will also be able to watch the short film titled Eger, 1552 on May 13, on the Day of the Memorial Sites.
The press officer said that the program would start with a parade of traditionalists in the city center, followed by a commemoration ceremony and a screening of the award-winning film, which brings the siege of Eger Castle to life from the perspective of today’s students, with the participation of the filmmakers and actors. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion to provide behind-the-scenes insights into the making of the film.
She added that the ethnographic collection of the István Dobó Castle Museum has been enriched with a valuable gift. The private donation from nearby Noszvaj gives an insight into 20th-century life through 123 items, including men’s and women’s clothing, household and housing culture, crafts, and tools of economic life.
Petneházi-Halász recalled that the research of the 18th century hermitage chapel of Nagy-Eged Mountain started on a civic initiative in February 2020, and since then the István Dobó Castle Museum has continued the work with volunteers, local patriotic residents, and local historians. On June 2, an exhibition of the latest finds related to the chapel will open again in the new southern reception building of the castle museum, followed by a conference on the topic in October.
