Crowds to Travel during Pentecost Weekend

Hungary Today 2023.05.11.

Pre-bookings for the Pentecost long weekend increased by 15 percent compared to the previous year, Szallas.hu reported based on its own data.

According to the most recent survey of the booking site, Gyula, a spa town in eastern Hungary, Siófok at Lake Balaton, and Eger, a northern city known for its wine, attract the most guests, while Budapest is in sixth place. Szeged in southern Hungary, Hajdúszoboszló, a spa town in eastern Hungary, Balatonfüred at Lake Balaton, and another spa town in western Hungary, Zalakaros, also made the top ten list.

Eger is a major educational and cultural center, home to one of the largest basilicas in Hungary, and many other famous monuments and museums, most notably Eger Castle. As the center of the Eger wine region, it is one of the most important Hungarian wine towns, and the Egri bikavér (Bull’s Blood of Eger) is a red wine variety known and recognized abroad. Nearly a third of guests stay in apartments, 26 percent in guesthouses, and 23 percent in hotels. The average booking price for the three-day holiday, as conveyed by Szallas.hu, is HUF 12,000 (EUR 32) per person per night.

Even though inflation can be felt in hotel prices as well, besides food prices, it seems that this does not deter Hungarians from traveling either in the country or abroad.

Domestic tourism is increasing rapidly, mainly due to foreign guests, and the sector has a positive outlook on the complete performance of 2023.

There was another long weekend recently, as May 1, Labor Day, fell on a Monday. The three-day weekend also saw many people opting to travel, with bookings for this period just down 10 percent on the “season-busting four-day Easter long weekend,” Szallas.hu wrote. Budapest, Eger, and Pécs topped the list of the most popular domestic destinations at the time, with Szeged, Gyula, Sopron, Balatonfüred, Hévíz, Siófok, and Hajdúszoboszló also in the top ten.
