Without the electrification of the automotive industry and investments in nuclear energy, the preservation of the planet for our descendants will remain an illusion; without it, it will not be possible to achieve our climate goals, the Hungarian Foreign Minister said in Abu Dhabi.
Péter Szijjártó was invited to Abu Dhabi by the Minister of Energy of the United Arab Emirates to participate in a panel discussion at an energy conference and to hold energy talks with representatives of several countries.
The minister stressed at the conference that increasing competitiveness and protecting the environment must go hand in hand, but without nuclear energy, achieving green goals will remain an illusion, a dream, as it will not be possible to generate enough electricity for the population and industry in a sustainable way.
He described nuclear energy as a cheap, safe, and environmentally friendly way of energy production. Regarding the expansion of the Paks nuclear power plant in Hungary, the politician emphasized that this would avoid the emission of about 17 million tons of carbon dioxide and the consumption of 3 to 3.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year.
Szijjártó emphasized the need to fight discrimination against nuclear energy in the EU. In this context, he described the German government’s refusal to allow Siemens Energy to supply control technology to Paks despite earlier agreements as an unfair attack on Hungary’s sovereignty.
After his visit to Abu Dhabi, the minister shared on his Facebook page that he had met, among others, his counterpart there, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahajan, who “personally did a lot for the stability of the region and the normalization of relations with Israel, which was the first successful step toward peace in the Middle East after the failures of the past decades.”

he wrote.
He also held talks with the Emirati Energy Minister, Suhail bin Mohamed al-Mazroui, and stressed that the UAE, like Hungary, is committed to the use of nuclear energy.
Szijjártó also held talks with Egyptian Energy Minister Mohamed Saker al-Markabi, whose country is building nuclear reactors using the same technology as Hungary and with the same contractor.
In his report on the meeting, he remarked that
nuclear energy is indispensable for Hungary, while all other environmentally friendly energy production methods require much more land.
Finally, the foreign minister also held talks with the Finnish Minister of Economy, Mika Lintila.
