The competition track for the World Athletics Championships in Budapest in August was unveiled to the press on Wednesday.
State Secretary for Sport Ádám Schmidt, the government commissioner responsible for the World Championships, said that
the event would be watched by nearly 400,000 people on site and by around one billion people via television.
He also said that part of the 35,000-seat grandstand would be dismantled after the biggest sporting event in Hungary’s history, and that the temporary spectator area would be replaced by one of Europe’s most beautiful running circles for sports fans, while professional athletes would train in the center. He also said that a 10.5-hectare sports park will be created next to the stadium after the World Cup to serve a healthier lifestyle.
The Mondo-surfaced, world-class, nine-lane track is extremely fast and unique in Hungary. The track surface in the National Athletics Center is asymmetrical, which will allow spectators to follow the races closer, both in the running and jumping events. Unlike previous practice, the results announcements will be held outside the stadium, in the so-called Medal Plaza, before the evening program, rather than between the events, so spectators arriving at the facility will be able to meet the world’s best athletes face-to-face.
In addition to the completion of the competition track, the technical handover of the stadium building has also begun, with a unique and distinctive interior design. A 500-seat press box, a 110-seat press conference room and a 400-seat press center have been created for the media. There is also a covered six-lane running track, and in parallel with the construction of the arena building, a 168-meter-long single-pylon pedestrian bridge – also known as the Robinson Bridge – has been completed to link the arena to the training ground in Csepel.
The World Championships will be the biggest sporting event in the world this year; 2,500 athletes from 203 countries have already registered for the World Championships taking place from 19 to 27 August.
