A three-year dual vocational training program at BMW Group Plant Debrecen will start in September, with 100 tenth-grade students from three local technical schools selected to take part, was announced on Monday at a press conference at the site of the new plant.
Botond Barabás, the factory’s training manager, said it was not easy to select the 100 students because they met many well-prepared young people committed to their future profession at the three schools: the András Mechwart, Sámuel Brassai, and Pál Beregszászi vocational schools.
According to the information provided, the dual training program will see 100 students starting work in four professions: automotive mechatronics technician, mechatronics technician, electronics technician, and IT systems and applications technician – and after three years they will be offered a job at BMW’s car plant in Debrecen.
László Papp, mayor of Debrecen, said that the economic development currently taking place in the city is the largest economic development process on the scale of Hungary and Central Europe. According to him, a change of scale and progress are the words that best describe Debrecen, and added that there will be enough skilled labor for the businesses that have settled or are settling in the city.
He indicated that almost all companies have or are signing cooperation agreements with the local vocational training center and the University of Debrecen, which also means that companies rely on the city’s education system. Papp said he was pleased that the BMW factory had hired its 200th employee in March and that there were currently around 400 applications for 70 positions.
Zsolt Tirpák, chancellor of the Debrecen Vocational Training Center (DSZC), said that BMW is a kind of call to the city, an opportunity for young people. He added that the cooperation between the DSZC, educational institutions, and BMW has been going on for six years, one of the important pillars of which is the coordination of basic education in the sector. This period has been marked by joint curriculum development and participation in the training of trainers, he stated, adding that
with the involvement of BMW Group Plant Debrecen in dual training, a new era of vocational training has begun.
Debrecen and the surrounding area is a place for many developments nowadays, with the most important and biggest one being the Chinese Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) company’s electric battery factory, which has caused quite an uproar in the city. Many people, together with opposition politicians, oppose the factory, even though it means a great opportunity for Debrecen and for nearby companies. The CATL plant will directly create 9,000 new jobs in the city with the largest ever investment in Hungary, worth some 7.4 billion euros.
Moreover, it was announced a few months ago that the German Boysen Group is investing HUF 60 billion (EUR 154 million) to create 400 new jobs in Nyíregyháza in eastern Hungary, 50 kilometers from Debrecen. The new plant will produce electric car components, specifically battery cover plates, for BMW’s plant in Debrecen. This will be Boysen’s first plant to produce parts exclusively for electric cars and the state-of-the-art factory will be based on renewable energy. The project will be backed by the Hungarian state to the tune of HUF 5.6 billion (EUR 14.3 million).
