Hungary Supports the Extension of the Abraham Accords

MTI-Hungary Today 2023.03.21.

We support and urge the extension of the Abraham Accords, because based on the experience of the past decades, this is the first initiative that can bring peace to the Middle East, the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade wrote on his Facebook page on Monday after a telephone conversation with Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen.

Péter Szijjártó wrote that they had discussed and reviewed the security situation in the Middle East at the request of his Israeli counterpart. “I assured my Israeli counterpart that Hungary remains committed to supporting a fair and balanced attitude of international organizations towards Israel,” the minister stated.

He emphasized that the Hungarian government rejects the Brussels approach that equates terrorist acts against Israel with Israeli action to ensure the security of the Israeli people, adding that Hungary supports the extension of the Abraham Accords because it is the first initiative that can bring peace to the Middle East.

Fact

The Abraham Accords were signed on September 15, 2020, negotiated by Jared Kushner, former senior advisor to President Donald Trump, in an attempt to normalize diplomatic relations between Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain. Since then, Morocco and Sudan joined the agreement as well. As a result, much progress was made in the relationships between these countries, and new opportunities were opened for cooperation on several areas such as defense, security, energy, water security, food, and health. However, the Abraham Accords still could not produce improvements in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Szijjártó also pointed out that economic cooperation is in the interest of both countries, and further steps will be taken to develop it. “We finally agreed that Eli Cohen will visit Budapest soon,” the Foreign Minister concluded.
