Hungarian Governing Parties Stand by the Legacy of Pope John Paul II

MTI-Hungary Today 2023.03.14.

Hungary’s smaller governing party, the Christian Democratic People’s Party (KDNP) rejected in the strongest possible terms the campaign in Poland to discredit Pope John Paul II.

According to their statement on Monday, Zsolt Semjén, President of the party and Deputy Prime Minister, and Miklós Soltész, Vice-President of the party and State Secretary for Church and Ethnic Relations, called it outrageous and unacceptable that a man who has always stood for human love and dignity and to whom the peoples of Central and Eastern Europe owe their freedom, is being attacked.

They expressed their support for Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, who asked for the support of people of goodwill not to remain silent when the Holy Father is insulted. They also stand by Barbara Nowak, the Education Inspector of Lesser Poland, who has asked people to display the Pope’s photo in prominent places – in the windows of their homes and workplaces, and on their social media profiles. They agree with Archbishop Marek Jedraszewski, Metropolitan Archbishop of Krakow, who says that the fight must be fought: not with violence, but with justice and prayer.

Last week, the lower house of Poland’s parliament adopted a resolution to “defend the good name of Saint John Paul II,” after a TV report suggested that the late Polish pope allowed priests under his authority to continue working in the church despite knowing they had sexually abused children, according to Notes from Poland. The resolution, which condemned the “disgraceful media campaign” against the former pope, was proposed by the national-conservative ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party, whose MPs voted in favor. Many of them also held up pictures of John Paul II in the parliamentary chamber, the news site added.
