Family Activities in the Buda Castle on the 15 March National Holiday

MTI-Hungary Today 2023.03.13.

An open-air exhibition, a screening of a cartoon film, a history re-enactment, craft activities and interactive children’s games, a weapons demonstration and horsemen on horseback, as well as the brass band of the Hussar Orchestra will be waiting for families on the national holiday on 15 March at several locations in the renovated Buda Castle.

The organizers said that the Buda Castle Garden Bazaar, the Csikós Courtyard and the Royal Riding Hall will also host the programs on 15 March, offering visitors a full-day experience.

In the spirit of the Petőfi 200 commemorative year, the programs in the Buda Castle Garden Bazaar will be based around the legendary hero János Vitéz (John the Valiant), a figure in the national poet Sándor Petőfi’s epic poem. An open-air exhibition will feature a selection of visual artworks by art students, showing excerpts from the poem of the hero from the perspective of today’s youth.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a museum education session, giving children aged 9-12 the opportunity to experience the imaginative world of poetry in pictures and to learn about a range of collage, drawing and painting techniques.

For those who want to experience more of János vitéz, there will also be a chance to watch Marcell Jankovics’ classic cartoon of it. As it is pointed out, the adventurous fairy tale is not only an unmissable children’s movie, but also a feat of fine art, as its visual world is a unique combination of Art Nouveau, pop art and Hungarian folk decorative art.

The reborn Royal Riding Hall building will be a place for craft workshops, where festive cockades, horses with sticks or hussar finger puppets can be made. A recruiting bell game will introduce children to the bell signals of the hussars, and well-known hussar songs will be played with small bells.

In the Csikós Courtyard, families can enjoy a weapons demonstration and the military traditions of the past. Visitors can learn about the events and historical figures of the 1848-49 Hungarian revolution and freedom fight at the Buda Castle in the Living History improvization performances, where the audience’s ideas can contribute to the creation of a scene. The hussar brass band will perform square music and visitors can admire the hussars on horseback patrolling the Buda Castle district.
