The winter of 2022/2023 was the second mildest national average winter since 1901, after 2006/2007, but it also had one and a half times the usual rainfall, making it the ninth wettest winter since the beginning of the 20th century, the National Meteorological Service reported on its website.
Assessing their measurements, they wrote that the season’s average temperature nationwide was 3.1 degrees Celsius, 2.7 degrees Celsius higher than the average of 0.3 degrees Celsius for the years 1991-2020. This means that the series of mild winters has continued for the sixth year in a row, with only the winter of 2016/2017 in the last ten years colder than average.
This was the second winter since 1901 with a national average temperature of 3 degrees Celsius. All three winter months were above average, with December 2.1, January 4.5, and February 1.6 degrees above average, and January was the second mildest since the beginning of the 20th century.
The weather turned wetter in the autumn, and continued into the winter, with a national average of 173.1 millimeters of precipitation, 150 percent of the climatic norm of 115.3 millimeters, according to preliminary data, making this the ninth wettest winter since the beginning of the 20th century. January was the wettest January nationally since 1901.
The number of frosty days – when the daily minimum temperature is at or below 0 degrees Celsius – was only 14 nationwide this winter, while the average is 63 days.
The number of harsh days – when the minimum temperature remains below minus 10 degrees – was just one; with the average being eight days. The number of winter days – when the daily maximum temperature is below 0 degrees Celsius – was only three this year, although the average is 22 days.
As for this winter’s records, the Meteorological Service said that the highest daytime temperature was recorded in Bata on February 21, at 20.6 degrees Celsius, and the lowest winter temperature was recorded in Gagybátor on December 13, at minus 15.3 degrees Celsius.
