In a few days’ time, on March 9, 20th Century Studios’ latest Alien film will start shooting in Budapest. The title of the production is not yet known, but it is known that the cult horror film will be directed by Uruguayan filmmaker Fede Álvarez.
Fede Álvarez’s name may be familiar to many, as he is credited with the 2013 horror film Evil Dead and the 2016 horror thriller Don’t Breathe. The filmmaker has now turned his attention to the Alien franchise, the latest installment of which will be about a group of young people on a distant world who come face to face with the universe’s most terrifying life form.
Along with announcing a March 9 start date for production, Fede Alvarez’s Alien film has set Mare of Easttown’s Cailee Spaeny as its lead and gave a brief synopsis for the story.

The next movie in the Alien franchise has already been rumored to be set in Budapest, and the studio has confirmed the news. The story of the current film is linked to the prequel series, Prometheus, released in 2012 and Alien: Covenant, released in 2017. The prequel series follows the original series, which began in 1979 with Ridley Scott’s Alien.
Hungary and Budapest are becoming increasingly popular with foreign filmmakers, as Csaba Káel, the government commissioner for film, has told Világgazdaság. He emphasized that “Budapest has recently become Europe’s biggest film production base after London, with top producers shooting with the world’s biggest stars.”
In recent years, Budapest has been the location for such well-known films as Red Sparrow, Inferno, Gemini Man, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, The Spy Who Dumped Me, Die Hard 5, The Rite, and Black Widow.
