Single-parent families are receiving ample help from the Hungarian conservative government, for whom supporting families is a visceral instinct similar to the maternal instinct, Justice Minister Judit Varga said on Thursday at an event organized by the Single Parents’ Center.
The minister added that certain “unacceptable cases” were prompting the government to tighten the child protection law and that the proposal would be submitted in the spring.
“Becoming a parent is a lifelong responsibility, you are tested every day. Raising children is one of the most beautiful tasks, but it is also a huge responsibility and challenge,” she said, adding that “the child is the most precious treasure of every parent, and for our political community it is sacred and inviolable.”
Varga recalled that in 2021, 6.2 percent of GDP was spent on family support, “making us a world leader,” and that there is great interest from abroad in our support system. She also remarked that it has become easier to establish and collect alimony. The government will do everything possible to help Hungarian single-parent families, Varga said.
State Secretary for Families, Ágnes Hornung, said that the family-friendly government must find answers to every situation in life and offer solutions to every problem that arises, which is why there are now more than 30 forms of support for families. For example, he said that divorced parents are entitled to an increased family allowance, the allowance for orphans has doubled, and divorced parents are entitled to childcare allowance for the same period as two parents together.
