The number of fatal road accidents in Budapest must be reduced to zero, and this is a goal that can be achieved in several steps, wrote Mayor of Budapest Gergely Karácsony on his Facebook page on Monday, after a meeting with Budapest Police Chief Tamás Terdik on Sunday’s fatal hit-and-run at a tram stop.
Gergely Karácsony said that at the meeting they agreed on the goal with Tamás Terdik and reviewed what steps are needed to strengthen traffic safety in the capital.
“In this, I believe in the principle of zero tolerance: in several steps, it is indeed an achievable goal that no one should die in a road accident in Budapest,” stated the mayor. He wrote that speed is the “primary factor in the severity of accidents,” and that it was also apparently a factor in the tragedy that occurred on Sunday morning in central Budapest.
According to Karácsony, the construction of a round-the-clock speed camera system in the city is also a good way of preventing and penalizing speeding, with the police having the primary task. However, the capital’s road operator also has a role to play, and cooperation between them will speed up. As he wrote, the capital’s road safety strategy has also been prepared- a series of urban development steps to strengthen road safety. The Budapest Mayor’s Office has started the professional consultation of this strategy, and recently discussed it with the Automobile Club, among others.
On Sunday morning, a car drifted into a tram stop at Harminckettesek tere in the capital and hit a 23-year-old woman waiting there, who died on the spot.
As the mayor said, it turned out that the lives of other two people also depended on inches in the accident, as they were standing 1.5 meters away from the victim. According to a police statement, the driver was a 41-year-old Italian, but the circumstances surrounding the crash are unclear.
