The Hungarian government spent 5.5 percent of its GDP on family support last year, the Deputy State Secretary for Family Affairs, Attila Beneda, said at an online conference related to the 61st session of the UN Commission on Social Development in New York on Monday.

According to Beneda, the government’s aim is to remove all obstacles that could hinder young people from starting a family.

He stressed that the government will not seek to repeal any family policy measures, but only introduce new ones or expand existing ones. To ensure that every family can have as many children as they want, the government has set three main family policy objectives:

  • encouraging women to have children between the ages of 20 and 30
  • increasing the income of households with children
  • improving work-life balance.

Beneda revealed that the share of work-related family allowances and benefits rose from 24 percent to 80 percent in 2022.
