A project worth more than HUF 5 billion has been launched to improve the water quality of Lake Balaton, the National Water Directorate General (OVF) said in a statement sent to MTI.
The HUF 5.14 billion (EUR 13.4 million) project will be fully implemented by October 31, 2023 and aims to improve the water quality of Lake Balaton, primarily by retaining sediment and organic nutrients from the inflowing waters, in order to protect the considerable economic potential of the lake.
They also pointed out that in the last three decades, a number of measures have been taken to alleviate the pressures on Lake Balaton, with the construction of technical facilities on several small watercourses near the estuary, which are capable of retaining sediment and accumulated organic nutrients. The new project, which is being carried out with non-reimbursable funding from the European Union and the Hungarian government, has begun to reactivate and reconstruct these technical facilities.
The project also includes the renovation of the Kis-Balaton Water Protection System, the largest water quality protection facility in Lake Balaton, along with the construction of water quantity and quality monitoring stations in the watercourses feeding the lake. These stations are being built in order to continuously monitor the nutrient load into Lake Balaton and the effectiveness of the water quality protection facilities.
