The year 2022 was the third hottest year in Hungary since 1901, with several months at least 2 degrees warmer than average, the National Meteorological Service writes in its analysis of last year’s weather on its website.
The hottest year was 2019, when the national average temperature was 12.05 degrees Celsius, and 2018, the second hottest, had a national average of 11.93 degrees Celsius. In 2022, the national average medium temperature was 11.83 degrees Celsius, which is 1.1 degrees above the average for the years 1991-2020.
The warmest years are clearly from the last few decades, especially the last ten years,
according to the analysis. The last colder year with an annual average temperature below 10 degrees Celsius was 2005, and every year since 2011 the national average has exceeded 10.5 degrees Celsius.
According to the analysis, March was marked by much more frost than usual, with the national average reaching 23 days, a record last seen in 1962.
The winter months were much milder than usual, while the average summer temperature was the highest nationally since the beginning of the 20th century. Last year, the national average high temperature reached 30 degrees Celsius on 46 days.
