The much milder-than-average weather since Christmas has not been kind to ski lovers: all ski slopes in Hungary were closed by Monday, Mandiner reports.

According to the news portal, at the end of last week, several ski resorts were still waiting for skiers with 10-30 centimeters of snow, but by Monday even the Mátraszentistván (northern Hungary) ski park – as the last one in the country – was forced to close due to the mild weather.

The ski park’s spokesman, Tamás Erbeszkorn, also told the portal that in Slovakia the slopes are operating with 30-40 centimeters of snow, and there has been no natural precipitation since early to mid-December.

Meanwhile, in Austria there is the hope of a normal ski season even at the lower altitudes, Mandiner writes.

The other popular Hungarian resort, the Eplény ski arena, had to close on January 4, after the condition of the slopes deteriorated badly due to the unusually mild weather. “We will reopen as soon as we can make snow,” they promise on their website.
