Four Paris Saint-Germain football players from different national teams combined to score 18 goals at the World Cup in Qatar on Sunday, and with that, the French club caught up with the leaders, the Hungarian Budapest Honvéd club. Members of the Hungarian team were part of the Golden Team, also known as the Magical Magyars, who played the final at the 1954 FIFA World Cup.
Honvéd’s players also scored 18 times for Hungary at the 1954 World Cup, the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) said on Wednesday.
France’s Kylian Mbappé, player of Paris Saint-German, was the top scorer at the World Cup, with eight goals in Qatar, while Argentina’s Lionel Messi, who won the World Cup by beating France in the final, scored seven times. At the same time, Brazil’s Neymar scored twice and Spain’s Carlos Soler once, and they are both players for PSG as well.
As a result, there are now three teams whose players scored 18 goals at FIFA World Cups: Paris Saint-German (2022), Bayern Munich (2014), and Budapest Honvéd (1954).
