Outstanding works by the most sought-after artists of the Hungarian contemporary art scene were up for bidding at the Virág Judit Gallery’s auction on Saturday.
Ilona Keserü’s painting Mosaic Design (made for Semmelweis University in 1974) was sold for 80 million forints (200,000 euros) at the post-war and contemporary art auction held by the Virág Judit Gallery in Budapest on Saturday evening. The painting, which has never before been on the art market, deals with the issue of color studies and is considered one of the most outstanding works of the painter’s oeuvre, the gallery told MTI.

Ilona Keserü (born in 1933 in Pécs) is one of Hungary’s leading post-war abstract artists. Her works are featured in the collections of numerous prominent institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Ludwig Museum in Aachen, the Nationalgalerie in Berlin, the National Museum of Modern Art in Seoul, the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, and several Hungarian museums.
Another female artist, Dóra Maurer’s Quasi-Image, perspective, from step 71, 1985 was sold for 60 million forints (147,000 euros). This is an important piece from Maurer’s Quasi-series and plays a key role in early 1980s art.
István Nádler’s 1970 untitled acrylic work is based on the color scheme of Pop Art and plays with vibrantly colored shapes and black and white bands. The painting was sold for 28 million forints (69,000 euros).
