Budapest Christmas Market Named Best in Europe

MTI-Hungary Today 2022.12.09.

Budapest’s Advent market at the Basilica has won the online vote for Europe’s best Christmas market with a record-breaking number of votes, organizers told MTI on Thursday. The Christmas market next to St Stephen’s Basilica in Budapest was followed by Gdansk in Poland in second place, and Craiova in Romania in third.

In the European Best Destination travel portal’s competition, Budapest’s Advent at the Basilica came out on top ahead of festive events in 21 major European cities, including Madrid, Vienna, Brussels, Salzburg, and Prague, the report said.

It was noted that the Advent event at St. Stephen’s Square has tripled: after 2019 and 2021, it was again named Europe’s best Christmas fair in 2022 and also earned the title of the Standing Star of Christmas Fairs.

Advent Basilica welcomes visitors from November 18 to January 1, 2023.

So far, only the fairs in Zagreb and Strasbourg have managed to earn the title three times, they added. The poll saw a record turnout this year, with travelers from 179 countries casting 374,803 votes for their favorite event. The Advent Basilica was the European leader with 51,253 likes, the most votes ever.

The market features a variety of traditional Hungarian, street food, and barbeque dishes, including deer stew, goulash soup in loaves, smoker-prepared pork, and beef tenderloin sandwiches.

As Forbes recalled, those Christmas fairs were eligible for the vote that offer cultural and artistic events with concerts, creative workshops, Christmas lights, fireworks and ice rinks, as well as a strong focus on sustainability, local food, and handcrafted products.

At the Advent Basilica, there is a 12-meter Christmas tree, light painting, a selfie point, an ice rink, and quality craft and gastronomy exhibitors. The three-dimensional play of light and shadow on the facade of the Basilica is one of the traditional highlights of the market.
