Hungary’s governing Fidesz party signed a declaration of cooperation with other center-right, sovereignist parties in the European Parliament on Wednesday.
The agreement will strengthen their ties, as it is “necessary to reflect the common sense, independence and national traditions of European cooperation that the partners embrace and represent,” Fidesz MEP Balázs Hidvéghi told journalists in Strasbourg on Wednesday.

He said that the cooperation between Fidesz MEPs, members of the European Conservatives, and Reformists (ECR) and Identity and Democracy (ID) groups in the European Parliament is significant because the parties involved can act together on the European stage. “Cooperation is in the interest of the electorate as well as the parties involved,” he underscored.
Hidvéghi said that the formation of a right-wing coalition government in Italy was an important development which, he said, could be a guideline for the future.
We must also start preparing for the European elections in 2024,
he stressed. The European Parliament holds its next direct elections in 2024, 705 mandates will be distributed to representatives of the 27 Member States. European citizens are voting for their national parties, whose representatives form groups in the parliament along party lines.
