Tourism in Hungary has been picking up again in the past year after a lull caused by the coronavirus, mainly due to the return of foreign visitors, according to a statement by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office.
According to the data, a total of 917,000 guests spent 2.2 million nights in commercial accommodation in September 2022. Commercial accommodation includes hotels, guest houses, campsites, holiday resorts and collective accommodation.
Compared to the same period of the previous year, the number of guests increased by 3.8 percent and the number of nights by 1.3 percent.
Although the number of nights spent by domestic guests decreased on a year-on-year basis, this number actually increased significantly between January and September 2022, by a quarter compared to the same period last year.
According to the statistics office’s data, the vast majority of guest nights, 69 percent, were spent in hotels.
The two most popular tourist regions were Lake Balaton and the Budapest-Central Danube Region.
The number of foreign visitors increased by 32 percent compared to the same period last year.
Financially, hotels did not fare badly either, with total gross revenue at current prices up 23 per cent to HUF 42 billion (EUR 105 million) compared to September last year.
