Number of LGBTQ Cartoon Characters on the Rise in Hungary

Hungary Today 2022.11.02.

LGBTQ characters are flooding into cartoons and children’s stories, Magyar Nemzet, a Hungarian news site has reported. The article reveals that there are several cartoons running in Hungary in which homosexual characters have already appeared.

The latest case centers on the cartoon Peppa Pig, which is watched by pre-school and nursery children all over the world. In a new episode called “Families,” a lesbian couple appear as parents to a polar bear. The polar bear says of his family: “I live with my mommy and my other mommy. One mommy is a doctor, and one mommy cooks spaghetti. I love spaghetti.”

The case has prompted a petition of protest from CitizenGO, a conservative advocacy group, which says the gay couple in the story is not unique and is likely to be part of the show in the future. CitizenGO believes that the LGBTQ lobby is trying to destroy the certainty in children’s minds that a family is made up of a father and a mother, and that it takes these two to bring a child into the world.

The lobby’s action has gone too far this time, as the youngest age group, 2-3 year old children, are being exposed to overt sexual-ideological content,

the petition claims.

It is for this reason that the organization is asking the managers of Hungarian TV channels M2, Petőfi TV, and Nick Jr., as well as the distributors of Peppa Pig and the makers of the official YouTube channel, to spare Hungarian children from the LGBTQ-sensitive episodes of the cartoon, in line with the protection and innocence of Hungarian children and Hungarian child protection legislation. The petition already has more than 48,000 signatures.

At the same time, the Magyar Nemzet article also points out that Peppa Pig is not the only cartoon available in Hungary that features LGBTQ characters. In an episode of the animated cartoon series Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous on Netflix, two girls kiss. This scene was also described as harmful by the Media Council of the National Media and Infocommunications Authority.
