92 percent of Hungarians would immediately put an end to the Russian-Ukrainian war and bring the parties involved to the negotiating table, according to an October opinion poll by the Századvég Foundation, a Hungarian think-tank. The survey also examined Hungarians’ views on the leading politicians involved and on the attitude of certain countries and political actors towards the Russian-Ukrainian war.
Given that the parties are no closer to ending the war, it is not surprising that the domestic perception of leading politicians directly or indirectly involved in the conflict, and committed to the continuation of the war or sanctions has not changed significantly, and remains clearly negative, reports Századvég.
In October, 67 percent of respondents had a negative opinion of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, down from 68 percent in September. Those who had an unfavorable opinion of Russian President Vladimir Putin rose from 69 percent in September to 72 percent in October. Similarly, the disapproval rating of US President Joe Biden rose from 64 to 67 percent over the same period.
According to Századvég’s analysis,
Brussels’ “punitive policies” do not meet the expectations of Hungarians, and the European Commission President’s popularity has continued to decline in recent weeks.
More than half of respondents (55 percent) have an unfavorable opinion of Ursula von der Leyen (compared to 50 percent in September), while 30 percent have a positive opinion of the Brussels politician, they said.
According to the survey, nearly two-thirds (63 percent) of Hungarians believe that the United States and Joe Biden are more in favor of continuing the Russian-Ukrainian war. This attitude is likely to be linked to the fact that the US president’s actions and statements are not contributing to the promotion of peace but to the further escalation of the conflict, said Századvég.
In Hungary, government policy is in line with the consistent pro-peace stance of the population,
with more than 84 percent of respondents saying that Hungary and Prime Minister Viktor Orbán are in favor of a peaceful resolution of the armed conflict, the analysis revealed.
Meanwhile, half of Hungarians believe that the European Union is working for a peaceful end to the Russia-Ukraine war. At the same time, 38 percent of respondents believe that China is working for a peaceful end to the war between Russia and Ukraine.
According to Századvég, based on their previous analyses, it is clear that Hungarians are opposed to taking steps in the context of the Russian-Ukrainian war that would hinder the achievement of a compromise and an early conclusion of the armed conflict through peace negotiations. This is inseparable from the fact that the overwhelming majority is firmly committed to peace, as confirmed by the latest research, the summary reads.
