The director of the Attila József Theater in Budapest, Károly Nemcsák, said that they have reviewed the November and December shows and have concluded that the easiest way is to target weekend dates and only perform on those days, ATV News reported.
This is one of the measures the small but very popular theater is taking to cut overheads, as it means they do not have to heat the building on other days of the week. The director could not say how long the special measure would last.
The even better known and larger Vígszínház, located on one of Budapest’s largest boulevards, is not in an easier situation.
There, due to the increased energy costs, only working lights are used during rehearsals, and it has been calculated that a full house at performances means an extra two degrees in the auditorium.
At the Vígszínház the utility bills have risen eight-fold compared to the previous period.
At another theater in downtown Budapest, the Centrál Theater, bills are now four times higher than before. The theater used to heat with gas, but now they plan to install air conditioning in the large auditorium. However, this will cost tens of millions of forints, which the director, Tamás Puskás, said would “eat into their future.”
