The new railway terminal in Fényeslitke, in eastern Hungary, will play a significant role in ensuring the continuity of Ukrainian grain exports that have been interrupted due to the war, assisting in alleviating the global food crisis, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said on Tuesday.
Speaking at the inauguration of the East-West Intermodal Logistics Ltd.’s rail gauge switching center, the politician undescored that the investment was launched at a time when cooperation between East and West still had serious prospects, when it seemed that trade between China and Europe could expand unhindered in the coming period.
He said that the project had taken on a new meaning with the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war, and that its purpose had changed from the original one, since one of the most important tasks for global security was to guarantee the continuity of grain exports from Ukraine, which required fast and efficient transport routes.
The route from Fényeslitke to the ports of North Adria is the fastest and most efficient route to ensure the security of food supplies in the far corners of the world,”
the minister said.
Speaking at the inauguration, Péter Szijjártó said that once again Hungarians can show the world something new and unique.
Szijjártó stressed that it is a huge step that the new center will have the capacity to transship around 800 tons of grain per hour, and the extensive storage capacities will also ensure that goods from neighboring countries can reach their destinations.
We are interested in peace in the neighborhood and we hope that one day this terminal will be able to fulfill its peaceful purpose,”
he added.
According to Szijjártó, the center, which is a 30 billion forint (EUR 73 million) investment, will employ 500 people and have a capacity of one million containers a year, double the capacity of the facility on the border of Belarus and Poland.
