Hungary’s Prime Minister and the Speaker of the Turkish parliament held talks about the war in Ukraine, and Turkey’s role in energy security and handling illegal migration.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán received Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey Mustafa Sentop in the Carmelite Monastery on Thursday. They discussed issues that are of equal strategic importance for Hungary and Turkey. Orbán’s press chief, Bertalan Havasi, told Hungarian news agency MTI that the EU sanctions – which have failed to end the war in Ukraine – and the developing energy crisis made this high-level meeting especially topical. Both parties stressed the importance of a ceasefire and the commencement of peace talks within the shortest possible time.
Orbán and Mustafa Sentop discussed the expansion of the conveyance capacities of East-West gas transit. The Prime Minister expressed his appreciation in connection with the fact that by having connected to TurkStream, Turkey has become one of the most important transit countries of the Hungarian market’s natural gas supply.
On the topic of illegal migration, Orbán stressed that Europe cannot be stable and secure without Turkey’s stability and security. “If Turkey did not make efforts to ward off the pressure of migration, migration flows of a magnitude never seen before would reach Europe,” the Prime Minister said, according to Havasi’s statement.
