The Everybody’s Hungary Movement is under investigation for embezzlement and money laundering. Péter Márki-Zay, the opposition’s former candidate for prime minister, said the case could easily be cleared up.
The police have launched an investigation into the alleged foreign funding received by the opposition Everybody’s Hungary Movement (MMM), Magyar Nemzet reported on Monday. The newspaper noted that the movement’s leader and the opposition’s former prime ministerial candidate, Péter Márki-Zay, claimed in the media that his movement received HUF 1.8 billion from the United States.
The National Bureau of Investigation (NNI) has ordered an investigation on suspicion of embezzlement and money laundering. The police confirmed the news to Telex, too.
Márki-Zay told ATV on Monday evening that he only heard about the investigation from the press, and he had not yet received an official inquiry, but he believes he will receive one sooner or later.
He also said that “these questions can be cleared up immediately,” because all their accounts are available on the internet, they have bank statements and VAT invoices. At the same time, Márki-Zay said it would not even be illegal if the campaign had accepted money from abroad, “because MMM is not a party.”
Last week, Fidesz group leader Máté Kocsis said that the governing parties will ask the national security committee of the parliament to review the “issue of foreign funding of left-wing parties.”
In August, Márki-Zay – who is also the mayor of Hódmezővásárhely (southeast Hungary) – claimed that as recently as July of this year, two months after the elections, his campaign received “several hundred million HUF” “from America.”
Márki-Zay said that the donations came from Action for Democracy, which was created in February 2022, just before the Hungarian elections. In a statement, the foundation rejected “any accusations of foreign interference in (the Hungarian) elections.”
