Hungary’s ruling party issued a statement criticizing the European Parliament’s Delbos-Corfield report about Hungary. According to Fidesz, Europeans have other priorities.
Fidesz called it “baffling,” that despite the ongoing crisis, the European Parliament is “busy attacking Hungary.”
According to the European Parliament’s press statement, the report by Gwendoline Delbos-Corfield adopted on Thursday, with 433 votes for, 123 against, and 28 abstentions, builds on the one with which Parliament triggered the Article 7 procedure in 2018, to provide an overview of developments in Parliament’s 12 areas of concern. “It thereby demonstrates how the values enshrined in Article 2 of the EU Treaties, including democracy and fundamental rights in the country have further deteriorated since 2018, through the deliberate and systematic efforts of the Hungarian government, and exacerbated by EU inaction,” it states.
Referring to the Delbos-Corfield report, Fidesz wrote in its statement that “while Europeans are suffering from failed Brussels sanctions and the energy crisis, the European Parliament, which has a left-wing majority, has no greater priority than attacking Hungary.”
According to the governing party, the “left side in Brussels” wants to punish Hungary and withhold the EU funds the country is entitled to because “Fidesz-KDNP won the elections in April, does not let illegal migrants into Hungary, does not let LGBTQ-propaganda into Hungarian schools, and opposes the EU sanctions which caused an energy crisis.”
