Afghan Migrant Vandalized Cars, Threatened to Kill in Hungarian City

Barbara Bene 2022.08.09.

The pressure on the southern border of Hungary continues, with illegal immigrants trying to break through the fence on a daily basis. Some of those who succeed, can sometimes cause problems in local communities.

An Afghan man vandalized cars and threatened a car mechanic in the southern town of Kiskunfélegyháza, about 70 kilometers from the Serbian-Hungarian border. The incident, which happened a year ago, was only now reported by Hungarian news site Origo. The report said that the Afghan migrant took his car to a mechanic for repair and later threatened to kill him and his family. After that, in the space of 24 hours, the foreign man damaged 23 cars, breaking mirrors and gas caps. He also stole money, a laptop, and a tablet from two other cars.

The damage caused by the illegal immigrant is estimated at approximately 3 million forints (EUR 7,600). The prosecutor’s office charged the man with assault, criminal damage, theft, and harassment.

Illegal immigrants arriving at Hungary’s southern border are becoming increasingly violent. Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said in early July that

violence at the southern border had reached a new level as migrants were being armed.

The minister’s statement came after a serious shooting incident in early July in Subotica, Serbia, where crowds of migrants were waiting to leave for Hungary. According to local reports, an argument between a group of human smugglers ended in an hour-long shootout with one dead and six seriously injured. The incident was reported from a forested area just north of the Serbian town of Subotica (Szabadka) on Saturday morning, and involved a group of Afghan and Pakistani migrants allegedly armed with firearms. Mayor of Subotica, Stevan Bakic, has confirmed that despite the efforts by doctors, one person could not be resuscitated, and a sixteen year old female was in critical condition.
