The Hungarian women’s saber team won the gold medal at the World Fencing Championships in Cairo, for the first time ever in women’s team or individual saber.
On Saturday morning, the Hungarian team of Sugár Katinka Battai, Renáta Katona, Liza Pusztai, and Luca Szűcs took to the pitch for the first time against the Italians. They won this match 45-43, then in an even tougher semi-final against Spain they won 45-31 and reached the final, which they won 45-40 over France, amidst great excitement.
The women’s saber team won the third medal of the Hungarian delegation in Egypt. On Monday, Áron Szilágyi won in the individual saber fencing event, and on Thursday, the team of Szilágyi, András Szatmári, Csanád Gémesi, Tamás Decsi finished second.
World championships in individual and team events have only been held in women’s fencing since 1999.
