The European Union is investing €5.4 billion to support sustainable, safe, and efficient transport infrastructure, with five initiatives in Hungary receiving EU support, the European Commission revealed on Wednesday.
The Brussels group has selected 135 transport infrastructure projects across Europe for funding under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), the EU’s instrument for financing strategic investments in transport infrastructure, according to the announcement.
The funding framework is designed to support projects in EU countries that are part of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). The funding will support economic recovery in all EU Member States following the coronavirus epidemic, while helping to build missing transport links across the continent. It will support sustainable transport, improve road safety, and create jobs,” they said. The EU Commission pointed out that several projects aim to facilitate the transport of goods between the EU and Ukraine due to Russian military aggression against Ukraine.
Five initiatives from Hungary were selected. Three of the projects aim to create safe and secure truck parking facilities, with grants of between €3.5 and €7 million each. Another is to draw up plans for the development of the Hegyeshalom-Szombathely-Zalaszentiván railway line, with a grant of €8.5 million. The fifth initiative aims to prepare the final plans for the transformation of the new Nyugati railway station in Budapest into a multimodal underground transport hub offering better services to passengers, with a grant of €2.8 million.
