Cardinal Péter Erdő, who has led the Esztergom-Budapest Archdiocese for 20 years, was greeted with a mass in the Esztergom Basilica on Wednesday on the occasion of his 70th birthday, with participation by László Kövér, President of the Hungarian Parliament, Zsolt Semjén, Deputy Prime Minister, and members of the Hungarian Catholic Bishops’ Conference (MKPK).
In his welcome speech, Bishop András Veres, President of the MKPK, said that the Cardinal had led the body for ten years, during which time “we have experienced and still feel his willingness to help the work of this community.”
The Bishop stressed that they were proud of Cardinal Peter Erdő’s service to the Church, with the help of the current Pope, and that the work of the Bishops’ Conference was enriched by his experience there.
Archbishop László Süllei, Vicar General and parish priest, recalled that at the inaugural Mass of Péter Erdő, the fundamental question was what can be done together now to advance the work of the love and peace of Jesus Christ in us and in the world. He said the question also shows courage because he is not afraid to show the world the way to salvation, adding that a life based on the word of grace unfolds before us in the Cardinal’s ministry.
In addition to the work of Péter Erdő as a church leader, László Süllei praised the cardinal, primate, and Archbishop of Esztergom and Budapest for his creative work in the field of law and theology, which has served as a guide for generations of canon law students.
At the end of the Mass, he presented the Cardinal with a book containing personal stories, congratulations, and photographs of those associated with him, recalling significant events in his life and work.
