Hungary could be hit by another, the sixth wave of the coronavirus epidemic in a few months, reports Index.
Imre Kacskovics, immunologist and Dean at the Faculty of Natural Sciences at ELTE, does not expect many seriously ill patients. He says that Hungary is in a quiet period now, we can enjoy the summer for a month or two, relax, and prepare for the next wave, but we do not have to worry about a very violent, high level of disease any longer, thanks to vaccination.
It is difficult to predict, however, when another wave of coronavirus outbreaks could arrive in Hungary,”
he said, adding that foreign tourists and returning Hungarians can also bring in the virus.
He suggested, especially for older people, that is, if one is going to a crowded place, wear a mask for safety. Vaccinations are important because they can alleviate a serious condition if infected, so those over 60 who are in the group at risk of underlying disease are recommended to get a fourth vaccination.
The youngest children will be protected, as research by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has found that Pfizer and Moderna are the two vaccines that are safe and effective for children under six.
He also talked about the names of possible new variants, the fifth variant of omicron is already on the way, and there is also BA.6:
As much as we would like it to be different, the virus is ‘doing its own thing,’ that is, mutating and constantly working out something new to evade the established immune response as much as it can and to be able to infect.”
