Online Tax Returns Increasingly Popular; HUF 50 Billion to be Distributed to Charities

Hungary Today 2022.06.21.

Christian communities are some of the greatest beneficiaries of the Hungarian tax-return policy.

Online tax returns have become the most popular option, with almost 1.3 million people donating their 1% of tax to churches and NGOs this year online, the Finance Ministry’s Parliamentary State Secretary András Tállai told wire service MTI.

Under Hungary’s tax laws, taxpayers are offered an opportunity to donate

1% of their income tax to charities of their choice, and another 1% to churches.

Tállai now revealed that 100,000 more 1% declarations were received online this year as compared to 2021.

However, the number of those making a contribution will probably still remain well under roughly five million, the total number of Hungarians due to pay a personal income tax, as in recent years this number remained around 1.6-1.8 million.

In addition, charities and churches may count on more money this year, as the amount of donations is increasing year by year, with taxpayers having the chance to decide on HUF 40.7 billion in 2020, 43 billion last year, and almost HUF 50 billion (126 million EUR ) this year.
