Prime Minister Viktor Orbán spoke by phone with French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday, the Prime Minister’s press chief Bertalan Havasi told MTI. The two leaders discussed issues in connection with European energy security, Havasi said.
French European Affairs Minister Clement Beaune also said earlier in the day that President Emmanuel Macron would discuss the issue of the oil embargo with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. “I think we could strike a deal this week,” Beaune told LCI television.
This follows a visit to Budapest yesterday afternoon by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who said that progress is being made, but that more discussions are needed, and that she will convene a video conference with regional actors on energy security issues, Portfolio reports.
President Macron also visited Budapest at the end of last year, and spent one day in Budapest meeting the participants of the Visegrád 4 summit, holding separate talks with Orbán, and receiving representatives of the Hungarian opposition. Since then, Orbán also visited France in March and met with the French President also in Brussels.
