Lajos Rig, the opposition’s candidate in Tapolca, who lost to Fidesz’s Tibor Navracsics, is quitting Jobbik and returning to work as a paramedic.
Rig previously said that he will return to his original profession, which is a paramedic, and wants to stay in the helthcare sector until retirement.
On election day, he congratulated Tibor Navracsics on his Facebook page, writing: “I wish him all the best for his work and good luck with his plans! Thank you very much to everyone who supported me with your vote! I am not discouraged and have no regrets!”
Under the present circumstances, I see no chance that I could represent the district against Tibor Navracsics in a meaningful and effective way. Thankful for the trust of those who voted for me, I must accept the will of the majority of voters,”
he also said, according to 24.hu.
He also told 24.hu, “I am very well, a huge weight has been lifted off my chest,” and that “There will always be self-proclaimed politicians, and I don’t want to be one.” Rig said he didn’t get enough voter support and is learning his lesson. He added that as with all of his previous decisions, he has the support of his family.

Rig said.
At most, he would return to public life if the locals really want him to, but “now is not the time,” probably not even at the next parliamentary elections in 2026. He also said that he offered his help and the use of his contacts to the locals, whom he did not abandon. He has no desire to be an activist, nor does he want to take up causes, he does not want to “back-peddle” in this way. He is also planning to leave Jobbik and has already told the party director.
Reacting to Rig’s announcement, Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony said that “I absolutely understand my fellow politicians who feel there is no point in continuing. But we cannot give up, we cannot lose our best people!” However, Karácsony has also announced that he will not continue as co-leader of Párbeszéd but he remains in politics and continues to be Budapest mayor.
