Population Decline in Hungary Continues to Accelerate

Preliminary data show that 6,068 children were born and 12,256 people died in February, with the number of live births falling by 15 percent compared with the same month last year, while deaths increased by more than 3 percent, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) said on Thursday.

As the number of births was lower than last year and deaths increased, the natural population loss increased to 6,188 as against 4,704 in February 2021.

In February, 3,520 couples tied the knot, down 14 percent from 4,092 in February 2021.

Fully 91,192 children were born over the last 12 months, down 0.5 percent from the previous 12 months, while 154,657 people died, a 7.6 percent increase on the previous year.

The natural population loss in the last 12 months came to 63,465 compared with 52,062 in the previous year, an increase of 22 percent.
