Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party on Wednesday said its website had been brought down by international hackers.
Fidesz’s website has been hacked by unidentified perpetrators, rendering it inaccessible, the party said in a statement.
The attack has brought down one of Fidesz’s key communications channels right at the tail end of the election campaign, “making it an obvious interference into the election,” the party said. “The left really is using every means possible to silence opinions that side with peace and security,” they added, without citing evidence.
A few days ago, hackers claiming to be members of the group known as Anonymous announced that they would be attacking pro-Fidesz sites due to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s alleged cooperation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. After the announcement, on Monday, several pro-Fidesz media sites were hacked. First messages mocking Fidesz or supporting the opposition appeared on these pages, then the sites became unavailable for hours. Now, a police investigation is ongoing regarding Monday’s hacker attacks.
The general election in Hungary will be held on April 3.
