“Let’s preserve Hungary’s peace and security,” Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in a video message on Tuesday.
“There is a war going on in our neighbouring country,” Orbán said in the video posted on Facebook. “We must face the challenge threatening our security with determination and in unity, as we did with the coronavirus and the economic crisis that came with it.”
“Today we are stronger than before,” the prime minister said. “Together with our allies we are capable of maintaining our security.”
Orbán also highlighted the importance of protecting Hungary’s economy and preventing energy prices from rising. “We Hungarians must not be the ones to pay the price of war.”
He said Hungarians knew the consequences of war “all too well” from history and therefore must not “drift into an armed conflict”.
“We have to stay out of this war,” he said. “But we must help the Hungarians and Ukrainians who have left their homes behind fleeing from the war.”
Orbán thanked Hungarians for the help they have provided to those in need in recent days.
