Diaspora Aid, an organization set up by Hungarians living in the UK, is organizing a fundraising campaign to ensure that Hungarians living in the UK can vote in the general election on April 3. In England, voting has so far been possible in London, Manchester, and in Edinburgh.

People residing in Hungary can only vote at diplomatic missions abroad, and not by post. They wrote that Diaspora Aid plans to send thousands of voters to the Hungarian missions in London and Manchester, who “gave up voting a long time ago.”

This NGO is now undertaking nothing less than to create, in the spirit of social mobility, the opportunity for all Hungarian voters living in and around the abandoned hub cities, regardless of political affiliation, to vote without any problems,”

according to Diaspora Aid‘s website.

444 reports that while there are officially 155,000 Hungarians in the country, unofficially there are many more. For this reason, last December, the group “Hungarians in England for a Change of Government in 2022” launched a petition to the National Election Committee and the National Election Office to ensure that voting was made possible through the provision of temporary polling stations, and polling stations in the cities of London, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Brighton, Bristol, Norwich, Nottingham, Cambridge, and Canterbury. They also asked for an increase in the number of polling stations in the official London and Manchester missions “to prevent previous unfortunate situations.”

Attila Nagy, president of the National Election Office, announced in mid-January that they were not willing to organize more polling stations and that they would deal with the issue after the elections.
