Richárd Rapport, currently the best Hungarian chess player, finished the prestigious chess tournament in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands, with a great outcome, beaten only by World Champion Magnus Carlsen.

The Hungarian grandmaster made it to the eighth round of the 13-round tournament and ended up tied for third place with Azerbaijan’s Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, one and a half points behind the Norwegian World Champion.
The last time a Hungarian chess player stood on the podium was in 2005, also in Wijk aan Zee, when Péter Lékó won the tournament founded in 1938 ahead of Viswanathan Anand and Veselin Topalov, while Judit Polgár finished fourth. But in the years before that, Hungarians were always close to the podium: Lékó in 2004, and Judit Polgár in 2003.
