Large-Scale Park Development to Start in Budapest

Hungary Today 2022.02.01.

The biggest park development in decades is about to start in Budapest with the redevelopment of the northern tip of Csepel Island.

According to a leading designer, Veronika Pápai from Openspace Kft., the park will provide a new atmosphere. For example, while Városliget (City Park) is an integral part of the city because of the through traffic, people visit Margaret Island specifically for relaxation as a quiet respite from the city. The area of Csepel Island, although not as isolated as Margaret Island, can provide a similar sense of retreat. On the western side, an urbanscape of office buildings will be built, while opposite this busy area on the eastern side, the Ráckevei-Danube will be the boundary, a zone comprised of very natural elements.

Fact

As Portfolio reports, the concept of green spaces was introduced in Budapest at the beginning of the last century, and in the 1930s it was complemented by the idea of complex green space use. It was in the post-war period that it was realized that parks could be built for relatively little money and that they added a great deal to the atmosphere and livability of a city. Then came the next big explosion in park development in the 1960s and 1970s.

Sándor Mohácsi, one of the leading designers of the public park, pointed out that from a financial point of view, the cost of a large urban park of this size is negligible compared to other engineering facilities:

It is estimated that for the price of a block of office buildings, a 36-hectare park could be created in Budapest, putting 40-60 blocks of a typically brownfield, industrial area on the green map of Europe.”
