Chief Medical Officer: Omicron Now Dominant Variant in Hungary

The Omicron variant of the coronavirus now accounts for 87 percent of infections in Hungary, according to the chief medical officer.

The Neumann Labs private laboratory, which first identified Omicron in Hungary, said more than a week ago that 90% of their positive cases were caused by the new variant.

"We are testing between 1,000 and 2,000 samples a day and we have a positive test rate of 25%, which only happened in the third wave, and within that, we have 90% omicron," Neumann Labs stated.Continue reading

Those most at risk of severe illness from the virus are still the unvaccinated, Cecília Müller said in a video message published on the government’s Facebook page on Wednesday.

She urged everyone over the age of 12 who received their second Covid vaccine dose over four months ago to get a booster shot as well.

Müller noted that Hungarians can continue to get jabs without registration on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
