The Hungarian women’s water polo team defeated Russia 11-9 in a close battle for bronze in Tokyo, winning their very first Olympic medal after placing fourth three consecutive times in the past.
The curse seems to have been broken, and after three consecutive fourth place finishes at the Olympic games, the Hungarian women’s polo team was finally able to bag their first medal in their bronze medal match against Russia.
Team Hungary had a confident start taking the lead in the very first minute, but the Russians quickly managed to catch up, resulting in a 2-2 draw in the first quarter.

The Hungarians later took the lead again but in the second half, the Russians could turn the game around and had a one-goal lead. In the fourth quarter, Hungary scored a comeback of 4 goals, while their opponent could only find the net once, ultimately setting the final score to 11-9.
After finishing fourth in Beijing, London and Rio de Janeiro, the women’s water polo team finally won their well-deserved bronze, securing Hungary’s 19th Olympic medal in Tokyo.
