5-0: Major Defeat Against Germany Kicks Off the Nations League for Rossi’s Squad

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.09.09.

Germany claimed a dominant 5-0 victory over Hungary in the first round of the UEFA Nations League in Düsseldorf on Saturday evening. The five-goal margin was the heaviest defeat of the Marco Rossi era for the national football team since 2018.

Before the national anthems, Jamal Musiala received the award for the most successful player of the summer UEFA Euro 2024, which he shares with other players of the tournament.

The German supporters, who were heavily outnumbered, generally outshouted the Hungarian fans, but at times the chants of “Ria-Ria Hungária” were still perfectly audible.

Marco Rossi’s team were a worthy opponent for about 20-25 minutes before their rivals prevailed and won a knockout victory in front of their home crowd. The goals were scored by Füllkrug, Musiala, Wirtz, Pavlović and Havertz.

The Hungarians have yet to receive five goals in a game under head coach Rossi.

Marco Rossi said that in Saturday’s 5-0 defeat to Germany, the team put in a reasonable performance in the first half, but “disappeared from the pitch” in the second.  “We should be ashamed of ourselves for the second half. It is difficult to say exactly what happened because in the first half we sometimes did what we had planned, but of course we also made two or three mistakes there and the Germans had chances from those,” he emphasized.

The head coach added that after the break, Hungary gave away a lot of balls, lost most of their duels and after the home side’s second goal, “we simply disappeared from the pitch.”

I have always said that you can get beaten by Germany. If we lose with no goals, that is bad, but if we lose 5-0, that is a shame. I am the first person responsible and then the players,”

he noted. Rossi, who celebrates his 60th birthday today, highlighted that it is no easy task to prepare the team for the match against Bosnia at the Puskás Arena on Tuesday evening. “We only have three days, tomorrow will be spent on regeneration. Above all, the most important thing will be to get mentally fit, because the reason why we lost by such a margin was mainly the second half performance,” he concluded.

The result of the other match of the group:
Netherlands – Bosnia and Herzegovina 5-2

The Hungarian team will host Bosnia and Herzegovina on Tuesday in the second round of the UEFA Nations League at the Puskás Arena, with the game starting at 9:45 p.m.
