46th CISM World Military Parachuting Championship Kicks Off Today

Hungary Today 2024.07.03.

The 46th CISM World Military Parachuting Championship are set to begin in Szolnok (central Hungary), on July 3, reports honvedelem.hu.

This prestigious event, organized by the International Military Sports Council (CISM), will bring together nearly 300 athletes from 32 countries. Competitors will showcase their skills in style jumps from 2,200 meters for individual events and various formations from 3,200 meters for team competitions.

The Hungarian Defense Forces are supporting the event with H145M and H225M helicopters, which will be used for the jumps.

The competition will take place at the Szolnok-Szandaszőlős Sport Airfield from July 4-11, 2024, with the opening ceremony scheduled for July 3 at 09:00 on Hild Square in Szolnok.

Tamás Vargha, the Parliamentary Secretary of State of the Ministry of Defense, spoke at the opening ceremony, highlighting Hungary’s sporting prowess and the government’s commitment to supporting sports. He emphasized the importance of sport in fostering fair competition and building relationships:

in this difficult world, sport shows the way and teaches how to fight fairly, and the competing parties learn to see each other as opponents and not as enemies.”

Mr. Vargha also stressed the historical significance of the event, noting that the International Military Sports Council was founded in 1948 to bring soldiers together on the sports field rather than the battlefield. Hungary joined the council in 1991.

The politician praised the Hungarian National Defense Parachute Team for their exemplary skills and expressed pride in hosting the championship again after six years: “it is an honor for our country, our nation, and the city of Szolnok to host the world’s elite military parachutists once again.”

Ferenc Szalay, Mayor of Szolnok, highlighted the strong connection between the city and the military, mentioning the presence of a helicopter brigade and a special-purpose brigade in the city.

He noted that many members of the Hungarian national parachute team have historically come from Szolnok, a tradition that continues today.

The event, hosted by the Kiss József 86th Helicopter Brigade, will run between July 2-13, 2024. It represents an opportunity for Hungary to showcase its military capabilities and foster international cooperation through sport.
