Around forty programs, over five hundred participants, including Moldavian and Gyimes Csángós, as well as Hungarian tradition keepers from Transylvania and Slovakia, will be featured in the program of the 33rd Csángó Festival and Folk Art Fair that will take place between August 6 and 10 in Jászberény (Northern Great Plain).
The event showcases the folk art of Hungarians living beyond the border in order to strengthen the identity of minorities and nationalities, reads the organizers’ announcement.
On the first day of the festival, August 6, the Fokos Band will give a concert. On August 7, the Jászság Folk Ensemble will perform on the Székely Mihály open-air stage with the participation of the Zagyva Band, Bence Pálházi’s Band, Milán Hetényi, Soma Salamon, and Sára Zolnai. On the same day, in the evening, there will be a dance house at the seat of the Jászság Folk Ensemble with the Duhaj Band.
On August 8, the Jász Band, the Pusztinai Kakasok, the Erdei Band, the Tindia Band, and the Pachake Rom will give a concert on the Main Square stage. There will be a folk music concert on the Holló András Street podium, followed by performances by the Magyarpalatkai Band and the Duhaj Band. At the seat of the Jászság Folk Ensemble, there will be a Moldavian and Gyimesi Csángó folk dance party and dance house called Folk Pub, followed by a night concert performed by the Ritmusa Band and the Szászcsávási Band.
The facade of the Déryné Event House will be illuminated with light painting on this day.
On the morning of August 9, there will be a folk mass at the Roman Catholic Cathedral. Afterwards, a wreath-laying ceremony will be held in front of the Déryné Event House at the memorial plaque of actor, director, and dramaturge Elemér Muharay.
In the afternoon, there will be a music and dance parade in the Main Square. Several groups will perform at the Táncpanoráma (Dance Panorama) gala on the Main Square stage, followed by a gala performance by the Muharay Elemér Folk Art Association.
In the evening, visitors can see performances by the Csángós of Moldavia and Gyimes.
On August 10, a Turkish ensemble will perform on the Main Stage, followed by the Zurgó Band, and in the late afternoon, the Viganó Elementary School of Arts in Jászberény will present a gala performance entitled “It Speaks from Our Hearts, It Lives in Dance.”
In the evening, traditional dancers and musicians will perform in a gala show entitled “See you again, Jászberény.” Performers include Csángós from Gyimes, traditionalists from Transylvania, a dance ensemble from Türkiye, as well as the Jászberény Traditional Dance Ensemble, the Jászság Folk Ensemble, the Zagyva Band, the Barkóca, and the Galagonya dance ensembles.
The festival will end with fireworks.
During the event, from August 8 to 10, a folk art fair will also welcome visitors with folk artists and handicrafts, while the ‘Csángó Village,’ set up in a yurt tent on the Main Square, will present the Csángó way of life through an interactive living space.
