The Hungarian Turán Association and the Hungarian Turán Foundation are organizing the Kurultaj – Hungarian Tribal Meeting in Bugac (Central-Hungary) from August 9-11, 2024, according to Programturizmus.
This event, the largest of its kind in the Carpathian Basin, commemorates Hungarian ancestors and historical figures, fostering unity among Hungarians and related Eastern peoples. The Kurultaj serves as a significant cultural gathering and tribal meeting, welcoming over 25 nations and featuring more than 50 programs highlighting Hun-Turkic cultures. It has been patronized by Sándor Lezsák, Vice-President of the National Assembly. In this article we summarize the main venues and programs offered by this spectacular event.
One of the tents hosts archaeological and anthropological exhibitions across giant yurts, showcasing artifacts from the Hun, Avar, and conquest periods (from 890s AD to the early 900s AD). Visitors can view original skulls, weapons, jewelry, and reconstructions of Hun leaders’ faces. The world’s largest yurt, Atilla’s Tent, presents archaeological reconstructions and a monumental semi-circular painting depicting “The Huns’ arrival”. Coordinated by scientific experts, this tent offers insights into the Hun era.

Highlights include a parade with 5,600 traditionalists on horseback and foot, featuring demonstrations by world-renowned horse archers and traditional nomadic trials of strength. Infantry-armored duels and demonstrations of Hun chieftains’ costumes add to the historical spectacle. Visitors can also witness bronze casting and the craftsmanship of gunsmiths, showcasing techniques from ancient times through experimental archaeology.

Organized by the Turanian Federation, competitions include horse races, horse wrestling, and archery obstacle courses with valuable prizes. The festival also hosts the Hungarian stick-pulling national competition and a large-scale belt wrestling championship.

The festival offers educational lectures on Hungarian prehistory and geopolitical topics. Handicraft demonstrations and a fair exclusively featuring Hungarian crafts highlight the cultural richness of the Carpathian Basin. Folk music and dance performances entertain visitors, featuring traditional and modern interpretations.
The festival concludes with a ritual fire ceremony, honoring ancestors and celebrating their legacy.
Kurultaj not only celebrates Hungarian heritage but also serves as a bridge for cultural exchange among Eastern peoples. Admission is free, inviting all to experience and learn about the rich history and traditions of the Carpathian Basin.
