18th Szederinda International Festival Celebrates Folk Culture in Eger

Hungary Today 2024.06.28.

This weekend marks the 18th edition of the Szederinda International Festival in Eger (northeastern Hungary), where folk dancers and musicians will animate the city center from June 28 to 30.

According to Egerhirek, the lively event will feature performances by both local and international artists, including folk singers, a dance hall, a folk art fair, and festive activities on Dobó Square.

The 18th Szederinda Folk Dance Festival begins Friday evening at 6 p.m. at Dobó Square, showcasing three days of performances by bands from various regions. Nearly twenty folk dance groups from across the country, many with their own orchestras, will participate. Additionally, groups from Serbia and Slovakia will add an international flair to the festivities.

The festival was established to allow all age groups to showcase the dances they have learned and pass on these traditions to future generations.

It is also about celebrating Hungarian culture, from our costumes and dances to our folk music and instruments,” said Ágnes Balogh, leader of the Szederinda Folk Dance Ensemble. “The festival creates a special atmosphere, and participants return home with many positive experiences.”

Throughout the weekend, colorful regional costumes will be prominently featured, with special emphasis this year on the Palóc costume. Workshops led by performers from Slovakia and Pécs (Southern-Hungary) will also offer opportunities for attendees to learn traditional dances during interactive sessions.

In addition to the performances, visitors can enjoy a fair featuring stilt walkers, handicrafts, and a children’s performance by the Harlequin Puppet Theater, complete with folk songs and games.

Saturday’s schedule includes dance performances from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., followed by another session from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.. The day will culminate with a vibrant parade of folk dancers winding through the heart of Eger at 6 p.m., providing a colorful spectacle for all to enjoy.
