With one month to go until the first day of competition in Paris, Hungary has officially secured 170 quotas or qualification spots for the Summer Olympic Games in 19 sports. This includes four teams: in water polo and handball, both the men’s and women’s national teams will compete.
The qualification period for several sports ended last weekend. It was announced that Hungary will not have participants in weightlifting and urban sports such as freestyle BMX, skateboarding, sport climbing, and breakdancing in the French capital.
Meanwhile, at the European Aquatics Championships in Belgrade, two more Hungarian athletes qualified: Balázs Holló and Minna Ábrahám.
However, two others, Katalin Burián and Benedek Kovács, despite achieving the qualifying standard, will not compete and are only third in the Hungarian medal order in their respective events. The number of swimmers in relays, currently 12 men and 10 women, may be affected by further selections.
In equestrian events, Hungary could see two participants at the Olympics after a long absence — the last time a Hungarian rider competed was in 1996. Hungary has secured quotas in both equestrian sports.
In pentathlon, only four athletes will be eligible to compete — the Hungarian federation will announce their names later.
Although five Hungarians could be nominated, in athletics, there is still this week to reach a world ranking or collect more points, as the qualifying period ends on Sunday.
In judo, the nearly two-year points accumulation period has already concluded, and the international federation will officially notify the national federations of the participants in Paris today. We secured 7 Olympic judo quotas, including a free card. Bence Pongrácz joins 5 other judokas, enabling Hungary to compete in mixed team event at Paris Olympics.
The opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics will take place on July 26, but the competition program begins on July 24 and 25, featuring rugby, football, archery, and handball.
